Internships are fantastic opportunities that can provide students with experience, networking opportunities, and professional growth. Another great opportunity an internship may offer is the possibility of a full-time position with the company or organization you are interning with.
Starting off an internship may be nerve-wracking for certain individuals due to the fear of being unsuccessful in the internship. This fear may be due to thoughts such as not understanding the material that is being taught in the internship. Personally, when I started my first internship, I always had a fear of not learning at a good pace and falling behind the other interns.
Having the chance to internship with Concurrency and participating in their Passport Meeting Program, I have a few tips that will help individuals become a successful intern:
- First Impressions: First impressions are very critical. Come in to work on time. Be polite, friendly, respectful, and helpful in any way possible. Keep doing this routine to make sure you maintain that first impression.
- Ask for Feedback: If you want to know how well you are performing in your internship, ask your supervisor! If there is a full-time employee that is helping with your training, I would ask them for feedback as well. This is a good way to make sure that expectations are being met.
- Add value to the company/organization: This is a important tip! It is essential to contribute to the company’s success which will show the following:
- You are engaged in the work that you were given
- You can complete work task successfully
- As a intern, you are looking for ways to help the company succeed (Adding value to the company!)
I would suggest asking your supervisor for work tasks where help is needed. I would also reach out to co-workers and see if any help is needed on any specific task.
- Establish Good Relationships with Co-workers: When starting off a internship, some interns may be adapting to the new environment and nervous to reach out to co-workers. I would suggest making time to shake hands and getting to know the people you are working with. A good way of doing this is to invite co-workers to lunch.
- Ask Questions: No one wants to seem like they are lost and don’t know what they are doing. This is one of the key factors that stops people from asking questions. There is no such thing as a silly question. Asking questions shows that you are trying to learn and that you are interested in the topic. I would highly recommend asking a lot of questions, especially if you do not know what you are doing.
These tips have been beneficial to my internships. Using these tips should help strengthen your chances in becoming a successful intern. It also can help strengthen your chances in possibly becoming one of the next full-time employees with the company you are interning with.
