Some good news was announced over the weekend for all SharePoint Administrators & Developers; ULS Viewer is alive again! This is a handy tool that was released years ago and then discontinued. We were forced to dig up the .exe from an archive site or a fellow SharePointer to enjoy it. This announcement came from Bill Baer's blog post. There is another ULS log viewer that is available on Codeplex which does not have all of the features of the viewer recently announced by Microsoft but gets the job done in a pinch.
This tool is critical when working with SharePoint for troubleshooting and debugging SharePoint issues. The unified logging service (ULS) collects data at varying levels depending on the logging settings in the farm. These settings can be changed in Central Administration under the Configure Diagnostic Logging page. The default location for these log files (which can be changed) are:
- For SharePoint 2010
- C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\Logs
- For SharePoint 2013
- C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\Logs
