Now that Exchange 2013 co-existence is available with Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2007, I've been working on upgrade Exchange 2010 environments to SP3 in preparation for Exchange 2013 migrations. I however did run into an issue with Exchange 2010 SP3 at one of my deployments. It started with a report that a handful of users couldn't delete or move messages between folders. The error they got in Outlook was "Cannot move the items. The item cannot be deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied." There was a similar error message in Outlook Web App as well. After looking in the Microsoft social forums there is a known issue about this, Unable to soft delete some messages after installing Exchange 2010 SP2 RU6 or SP3
. The workarounds are valid as you can force delete the message or use Exchange Cached mode. Since this environment was using Windows Remote Desktop Services, that later was not an option. After calling into Microsoft Product Support Services to see if there was a hotfix available there is one, but not publicly available. Also you need to keep in mind this is an interim update, which means this update needs to be uninstalled before you apply any generally released updates. I usually get asked about interim updates when I point folks into the direction of the Exchange 2010 Servicing
. They ask how I know if I have an interim update installed. Well the answer to that is you would have needed to work with Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the interim update as these are not publicly available.
Below are some screenshots of the errors I saw in Outlook and Outlook Web App.
